What is a mechanical keyboard?

A keyboard can be called mechanical if it is equipped with high-quality, spring-operated key switches for each key.

Mechanical keyboards seem to have only been on the market for a few years. In reality, their history goes back several decades, to early PC icons such as the IBM Model M keyboard. These early entrants relied on high-quality mechanical keyboards.

As the PC began its triumphant march, the 1990s saw a flood of cheaper membrane keyboards flooding the market. Rubberdome keyboards or membrane keyboards account for over 90% of the keyboards in use today and offer a cheap but unsatisfactory tactile feel and typing experience.

Difference between conventional- and mechanical keyboard

Conventional membrane keyboards have a flexible three-layer design with a unified circuit underneath, like a TV remote control. The top and bottom layers consist of a membrane. In the middle layer is a conductive path that transmits signals.

Mechanical keyboards, on the other hand, have spring-operated, independent key switches. Unlike membrane keyboards, they provide excellent tactile feedback and user experience.

Mechanical keyboards

Unique typing experience

Offer an excellent feel and sound

More robustly built and longer service life

They are tailored solutions

Increase productivity

Tend to be more expensive

Conventional keyboards

Cheaper

Relatively quiet

Easy to dismantle and clean

Reduced service life

High stress on hand and joints

Elton John - John Legend

Most of us spend more time with the keyboard than a pianist does with his piano.

When it comes to Elton John's or John Legend's instruments, they both say: "Anything that isn't perfect isn't good enough."

Anyone who only has a keyboard under their fingers for half of their working hours spends over 1000 hours a year typing. Yet most pay virtually no attention to their "instrument".

Treat yourself to the pleasure and comfort of a mechanical keyboard.

What do our customers say?

Heinz S.

If you spend most of your day typing, programming or playing games, a mechanical keyboard offers a comfortable, customisable upgrade over the flat, boring keyboard that came with your computer.

Gianni R.

Iqunix Wormhole: Best crossover keyboard (gaming and work), full stop!

Tonino D.

The keyboard is your most important connection to your PC because it is the part you touch most often. This means that buying a better keyboard will make an immediately noticeable difference. I'll never give my Keychron Q1 back...

Sandra B.

I have to say the best thing is the sound of the keys, it's just so great to type on it. It feels like I'm using a typewriter. I'm looking forward to using it at uni where there are people around, LOL.

Petra V.

Very nice advice and quick delivery, thank you very much.

Richie S.

The Keychron K2 is almost like typing on a cloud compared to Apple's Magic Keyboard.
